Welcome to the SJPA Website!
Thank you for visiting our website! The SJPA is a voluntary, non-profit organization composed of paralegals, students, vendors and sponsors who study and/or work in a variety of areas in the legal field. SJPA members are dedicated to promoting the paralegal profession by networking, offering continuing legal education classes, to name a few.
In June 1985, the SJPA became the 33rd association member of the National Federation of Paralegal Association which represents paralegal associations throughout the Nation. Additionally, the SJPA continues to play an active role in the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Paralegal Committee. In 2010, we began offering our members the opportunity to be credentialed through the New Jersey Certified Paralegal Program and currently have over 50 members certified! Most recently, in May 2013, SJPA celebrated its 30 year anniversary of incorporation and this year will be our 25 year anniversary of SJPA being organized. Seems like a good time for a celebration!
On March 28th, SJPA held its annual PES and what a success it was! The committee is already planning next year’s events and what a “don’s miss” event it will be. On May 20th, at our general membership dinner meeting, Diana Kirkland, a student at Peirce College was awarded SJPA’s $1,000 scholarship. Congratulations Diana! Also, the Recognition Committee announced the winners of this year’s awards: Judy Alvelo - Board Member of the Year; Erika West - Student Member of the Year; and Betsy Lindenberg - Paralegal of the Year. Congratulations ladies – well deserved!
At our general membership dinner meeting on June 24th, the Board members for the 2014-15 year were inducted by the Honorable Michele M. Fox, J.S.C. Congratulations to Doreen Ziccardi, Vice President; Judy Alvelo, Treasurer; Karen Kapsimalis, Recording Secretary; Christi Valerio, Corresponding Secretary and Janice Kennedy as NFPA Secondary Representative. I thank the membership for re-electing me as President and NFPA Primary Representative. I look forward to the year ahead!
The Board is already busy setting our calendar and arranging events for the upcoming year. Please take a minute and explore our website. You will find useful information on membership, benefits, calendar of events, NJCP information and contact information for all of our Board members right here at your fingertips. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or any other board member with comments or suggestions.

On March 28, 2014 SJPA held its 3rd annual Paralegal Educational Symposium (PES) at The Enterprise Center located on the campus of Burlington County College in Mount Laurel, NJ. This was a full day educational convention for local paralegals. The program is designed to provide education to different experience levels of all paralegals by breaking the sessions into three categories: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Some of the topics included Workman’s Compensation, Stress Relief, How to Navigate “The Cloud” and a Paralegal Roundtable with 5 different areas of law covered.
Over 25 door prizes, which were donated by the sponsors and vendors, were awarded. Some of the winners received $50.00 and $25.00 bank gift cards, Phillies tickets, and movies tickets.
There were over 100 local paralegals in attendance, who were treated to a continental breakfast, a hot buffet lunch and afternoon snack to keep their energy up for learning.
This convention is a labor of love for the PES Committee (comprised of some SJPA board and non-board members) to provide a networking and learning event for paralegals in our area. The goal of this event is to provide an affordable, local, professional convention for paralegals to network and learn how to make themselves more valuable to their employers. It is SJPA’s intention to provide this convention annually. Hope to see you there next year.
